TOM PAYN (Winchester) ran a life-time best of 2:17.29, beating his previous pb by over a minute set last year, when finishing in a fine 12th place behind a world-class performance by Ethiopia’s Tsegaye Kebede who clocked 2:05.18.

Guys 10, Bilsborrow, nr Preston 6 December

ANTONY FORD (Sale Harriers Manchester) won the Guys 10 in a swift 48:52 with runners-up Ben Fish (Blackburn) clocking 49:01.

Schools International Pentathlon, Kelvin Hall, Glasgow, 5 December

IN the U16 Girls Nikita Campbell-Smith (Birchfield) competing for England won with a score of 3552 points from Ireland’s Ciara Giles Doran (Ferrybank) 3426 points and Scotland’s Rachel Whittle (Ayr Seaforth) 3281 points. In the team event England took the honours with Hannah Dunderdale (Lincoln Wellington) 3179 points, Hayley McLean (Chelmsford) 3127 points, making up the scoring trio with Ireland taking the silver medals, Wales the bronze medals and Scotland in fourth place.

The U18 Girls title went to England’s Jazmin Sawyers (City of Stoke) with a score of 3444 points and Katy Marchant (Leeds City) 3340 points and Emma Buckett (Basingstoke & Mid Hants) 3275 points made it a clean-sweep for Englannd. The trio made it an easy victory for England with Ireland taking the silver medals, Wales the bronze medals and Scotland in fourth place.

The U16 Boys saw another clean-sweep for England with Feron Sayers (Wolverhampton & Bilston) taking the gold medal with 3321 points from Jacob Paul (Epsom & Ewell) 3189 points and Joshua Olawore (Havering Mayesbrook) 2939 points. England took the title with Ireland in second place, Scotland third and Wales fourth.

The U18 Boys title went to Scotland’s Michael Downie (Arbroath & District) with 3610 points from Wales’ Paul Bennett (Carmarthen) 3391 points and Jamaul Whyte (Cardiff) 3342 points also from Wales.  The team event was won by Wales with their third athlete being Rhys Williams (Hereford & Worcestershire Schools) 3196 points from England with Scotland in third place and Ireland in fourth.

English Schools Cross country Cup, Newquay, 5 December

THE Junior Boys event was won by Jack Catterall (Bedfordshire Schools) competing for Robert Bloomfield Middle School, Shefford in 11:23 from James McCarthy (Chiltern) Dr Challoner’s Grammar School, Amersham 11:24 and Niall Flanagan (Wirral) Calday Grange Grammar School, Wirral 11:25. The team event was won by Dr Challoner’s Grammar School, Amersham with Southend High School for Boys in second place and The Bishop’s Stortford High School in third place.       

The Inter Boys event was won by Peter Chambers (Croydon) competing for Trinity School, Croydon in 16:13 from Matthew Byrne (Wirral) St Anselm’s College, Prenton 16:17 and Oliver Kyriakedes Southend High School for Boys 16:21. The team event was won by St Anselm’s College, Prenton from Southend High School for Boys and The Judd School, Tonbridge.

The Junior Girls event was won by Charlotte Cayton-Smith (Newquay & Par) from local Newquay Tretherras School in a time of 9:18 from Holly Brown (Taunton) Queens College, Taunton 9:21 and Maisie Jones (Basildon) Fitzwimarc School, Rayleigh 9:33. The team event was won by Southen High School for Girls from Queen’s College, Taunton and James Allen’s Girls’ School, London.

The Inter Girls event was won by Susan Shiel-Rankin (Aldershot, Farnham & District) competing for Guildford High School for Girls in a time of 11:29 from Matilda Lowther (Eden Runners) Queen Margaret’s School, York 11:39 and Jasmine Finlay (Marshal Milton Keynes) Ousedale School, Newport Pagnell 11:49. The team event was won by Guildford High School for Girls from Penair School A Science College, Truro and Ousedale School, Newport Pagnell.
