Fresh from his World Record performance in Friday’s heat of the T54 1500m at the Meet in the Heat in Atlanta, USA, David Weir turned in a stunning performance to also add the 5000m World Record to his list ofachievements on the second day of competition.

In the final race of the day, Weir battled it out at a relentless pace with a pack of 6 other World Class athletes. With much still to do as he came off the final bend, he dug deep to snatch victory from his close rival Kurt Fearnley by the smallest of margins.

Weir’s time of 9 minutes 54.81 smashed the old World Record by over 6 seconds to place him as the first sub- 10 minutes record holder.

Shelly Woods also pushed under the old World Record in the corresponding Women’s race but was edged into 3rd place in another tight finish. Woods time was 11 minutes 40.27 seconds, well under the previous mark of 11:41.61.

There were other wins on the second day by Weir in the T54 400m and 800m, and Anne Wafula Strike in the T54 100m. These performances topped off a particularly successful meet for Britain’s Wheelchair Racers, which also included rising star Brian Aldis, all moving onto the Peachtree 10k with significant improvements in their personal best times.
