Weir Win Caps Great Week

David Weir completed a superb week of world-class wheelchair competition in Switzerland with yet another victory at the Oensingen Marathon on Saturday. The 28 year-old, who also triumphed in London in April, won the open men’s race in 1:28:19.

In the chasing pack there was further encouragement for British wheelchair racing, as Brian Alldis improved his PB by around five minutes as he recorded 1:39:31.

In the women’s open race, there was more to celebrate as Shelly Woods finished fourth in a new UK record of 1:40:20, lopping around ten minutes off her previous best.

The results cap a superb week for Britain’s top wheelchair competitors, who showed up well against several of their likely rivals at next year’s Beijing Paralympic Games in Oensingen and at track meets in Ibach and Prattelen earlier in the week.

In Ibach, Weir set a new UK record of 10:11:39 as he won the 5000m, whilst in Prattelen, Woods scored a great victory over a high-quality 1500m field in 3:31.50.
