Double Paralympic silver medallist and world champion Stef Reid (coach: Aston Moore) has been awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours List for her services to sport following a stellar 2017 both on and off the track.

Reid claimed the first world title of her glittering career in the T44 long jump at the World Para Athletics Championships in London this summer, a year after winning a second successive Paralympic silver at the 2016 Games in Rio.

Reid also played a key role as a board member for the organising committee of the World Para Athletics Championships London 2017, which broke new ground for Para sport at the London Stadium back in July.

Over a thousand athletes from more than 85 countries competed in 202 medal events at the World Para Athletics Championships London 2017 to the largest audience in world Para sport championship history and the best support experienced outside of the Paralympic Games.

Reid brought her competition experience at the very highest level across the world to her role as board member. Reid always loved sport but her passion for Para sport ignited after a boating accident resulted in a life-changing injury at 15.

Her commitment to sharing her passion with the world was especially evident this year as in addition to her roles as an athlete and board member, Reid played a key role as a broadcaster after winning gold at the World Para Athletics Championships in London.

Reid was also a broadcaster for this year’s Invictus Games and made her debut as an actress in ‘The Energy Within’ which premiered at the British Film Institute in October. It is about a disabled runner and is described as ‘an inspiration film about why disability isn’t inspirational’.

The 33-year-old was involved in various fashion campaigns as well, helping to challenge media perceptions of disability and self-image. Relied upon by nominations put forward by the public, the New Year Honours List recognises the achievements of a wide range of people across the United Kingdom, who do extraordinary things to support their community and reinforce civic life.

Reid said: “It had already been a great year, and this news left me completely stunned! I didn’t even believe it. My husband opened the letter and told me the news – I told him ‘don’t be silly, that’s ridiculous’. I am so thankful and honoured to be awarded an MBE. Sport has opened so many doors in my life and introduced me to some incredible people who have encouraged and challenged me. I am especially proud to represent a country that values Para sport.”

As well as Reid, Craig Carscadden and Leslie Roy have been awarded MBEs. Carscadden, a Paralympian and a coach, receives his MBE for services to athletes with disabilities and to the Paralympics. He is the current Head of Development at the Cerebral Palsy International Sports & Recreation Association.

Roy is the Scotland representative on the UK Athletics Members Council and has received her MBE for services to athletics in Scotland. Elected President of Scottish Athletics in 2011, Roy is now serving her second four year term of office.
