World Championships Team Additions

31 July 2009

UKA today announced two additions to the Aviva GB and NI team for the IAAF World Championships in Berlin next month.

James Brewer will join Andy Baddeley and Tom Lancashire in competing the 1500m in Berlin, whilst Will Sharman will line up alongside fellow Brits Andy Turner and Gianni Frankis in 110m hurdles.

Charles van Commenee, UKA Head Coach said:

"Both athletes were felt by the selection panel to be worthy candidates for inclusion into the Aviva GB & NI Team during the original selection process. James was missing an additional B standard so could not be included, but subsequent investigations demonstrate that his mile time at Crystal Palace was in fact within the standard.

"There was a very tight selection between Will Sharman and Gianni Frankis for the 110 hurdles, with Gianni edging it after much debate, thanks to his higher placing at the trials. Thankfully in light of Will’s outstanding performance in achieving the A standard at Loughborough on Wednesday the Appeal Panel has given the selectors special dispensation to include Will in the team."

Ed Warner, Chairman of the Appeal Panel, added: "The selection policy for 2009 was clear and robust. New information on James Brewer’s run in the Emsley Carr Mile allowed us to give the selectors an opportunity to pick him for Berlin. Will Sharman did not have a valid appeal on the basis of process or policy, but we were keen to give the selectors the opportunity to recognise his subsequent A standard and so add him to the team. I look forward to seeing them both run in the Olympiastadion"
