British Performances:

Day 4 (12 August)

Men’s 100m: Britain’s Simeon Williamson produced a scintillating run to claim Gold in the 100m – 24 hours after he thought he’d originally won it.

Williamson, of Middlesex University, had crossed the line first when the race was run on Saturday but was later adjudged to have false started after an appeal from several other nations. A ‘mistake’ with the technical equipment meant the gun had failed to fire for a second time and Williamson proceeded to record a time of 10.28 seconds to finish ahead of China’s Peimeng Zhang and Neville Wright of Canada.

However the European U23 Champion was not to be denied his crown, and in the pouring rain he finished even quicker in the re-run to ensure the title of Champion was undoubtedly his, coming home in 10.22 ahead of the same two athletes.

“To be honest my first thought was “what has gone wrong this time?” said the 21-year-old. “ In all seriousness though, I am delighted to have won the race, as I thought I’d already done it and it was hard to take last night when I heard the decision,” he said. “I didn’t think I had any more to give but I had no choice but to find it somewhere!”

Women’s 200m: Kadi-Ann Thomas (Brunel) won her first round heat in 23.81 secs and her second round heat in 23.67 secs to progress to the semi-finals.

Men’s 200m: Both Darren Chin (St Mary’s) and Simon Farenden (Leeds Met) moved through to the next round from their first round heats. Chin was third in 21.56 secs and Farenden second in 21.48 secs. In the second round both finished third in their heats to move forward to the semi-finals. Chin ran 21.23 secs and Farenden 21.61 secs.

Men’s 400m hurdles: Steve Green (Bath) qualified for the final in fourth position in a semi-final time of 50.59 secs. Ben Carne (Cambridge) finished sixth in his semi-final in 50.61 secs and did not qualify.
