YEAR IN REVIEW: JANUARY - MARCH

As 2017 made way for 2018 another major home championships loomed large – the IAAF  World Indoor Championships in Birmingham – with several British athletes setting the tone for a successful year. We begin our review of 2018 with a look at January, February and March…

 

1) Chris O’Hare made history in New York as he became the first British man to win the Wanamaker Mile for over 50 years. O’Hare clocked 3:54.14 for the famous victory and quickly followed it up by lowering his own Scottish record in the 1500m to 3:37.03 on the way to victory at the Boston leg of the World Indoor Tour a matter of days later.

2) An action-packed SPAR British Indoor Championships in Birmingham saw a host of world-class performances. Asha Philip, enjoying her best ever start to an indoor season, made it a hat-trick of 60m titles while Shelayna Oskan-Clarke claimed her fourth in a row in the 800m. Eilidh Doyle, Jake Wightman and Laura Muir were popular Scottish winners and for Lee Thompson and Megan Marrs the event will live long in the memory as they were crowned British champions for the first time in the 400m and 60m hurdles respectively.

3) Tom Bosworth stunned the home crowd at the Müller Indoor Grand Prix Glasgow as he set a new world record for the 3000m race walk. Bosworth crossed in 10:30.24, even producing a dip to make ensure he broke a mark that had stood for 17 years, subsequently pocketing a cheque for $15,000.

4) Great Britain & Northern Ireland placed fourth on the medal table as hosts of the IAAF World Indoor Championships including fine golds for Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Andrew Pozzi in the pentathlon and 60m hurdles respectively. Laura Muir completed a medal double with 1500m silver and 3000m bronze while Shelayna Oskan-Clarke, who was co-captain alongside Pozzi, and Eilidh Doyle delivered brilliant bronzes in the 800m and 400m. The women’s 4x400m team of Meghan Beesley, Hannah Williams, Amy Allcock and Zoey Clark would also claim bronze.

5) Across the pond, Tim Duckworth wrote his name into the record books as he claimed the heptathlon title in a British record at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Texas, the first Brit to win a multi-events title at any of the highly-prestige college events. Josh Kerr would also successfully defend his title in the mile.

6) There were some high-profile winners at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Dubai with Brits accounting for over ten wins across the three days. There were noteworthy performances from Sophie Hahn, Stephen Miller and Andrew Small in particular on day one as the Grand Prix started well for Britain.
