YEAR IN REVIEW: OCTOBER-DECEMBER

Attention turned to the roads and the cross-country circuit over the winter months from October to December, while awards season was in full swing. We complete our review of 2018 through the winter months….

 

Sir Mo Farah broke the European and British record over the marathon distance, setting a time of 2:05.11 at the Chicago event, and breaking Steve Jones’ British record which had stood for 33 years. It was his first victory at one of the World Marathon Majors, taking some notable scalps of the marathon scene.

The British team won six medals at the European Cross-Country Championships in Tilburg, Netherlands including gold for the U20 women’s team (Amelia Quirk, Khahisa Mhlanga, Grace Brock, Cari Hughes, Anna MacFadyen and Tiffany Penfold).

Kare Adenegan was crowned BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year 2018 after a stunning season which saw her win her first European title and set a T34 100m world record. The 17-year-old became the first female T34 athlete to go under 17 seconds over the shortest sprint, clocking 16.80 at the Muller Anniversary Games. In August, she won the T34 100m European title, and the silver over 800m.

Dina Asher-Smith has earned a series of honours after a highly successful 2018 season. Triple European gold, lowering both British records over 100m and 200m, a Commonwealth Games 200m bronze and relay gold were the outstanding moments from a record-breaking season.

Some of the notable prizes she has won include the European Athletics Golden Tracks Female Athlete of the Year, the SJA Sportswoman of the Year, the Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year, and BT Sport Action Woman of the year award, just to name a few.

Ross Millington and Charlotte Arter claimed victory at the iconic Sefton Park for the British Athletics Cross Challenge event in Liverpool which incorporated the trials for the European Cross-Country Championships.

For Millington it was a second senior men’s victory while it was a maiden victory for Arter in the senior women’s category.

British Athletics Head of Field & Combined Events Peter Stanley was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the UK Coaching Awards in November. Stanley has spent the past 30 years in the sport, playing a key role in the successes of some of Britain’s greatest track and field athletes, and was honoured for those achievements at the ceremony in London this November.
