Three athletes who represented the Norwich Union GB and NI team at the IAAF World Junior Championships this summer, have made a big impact at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India today.

 Record Breakers

16 year old Shaunna Thompson (Sale Harriers) ran 11.46 seconds to take 100m Gold and break the Commonwealth Youth Games 100m record.  

Afterwards Shaunna commented; “My plan was to go for gold in the 200m and get a medal in the 100m, so I’m absolutely delighted to win the 100m today.  To break the Games record in the process and run a PB is a massive bonus for me and I hope I can take this form into the 200m on Thursday.  The Commonwealth Youth Games has given me real hunger to take on the best in the world and really push myself for success in 2012.” 

Curtis Griffith Parker (Cambridge) also set a new games record with his incredible throw of 18.56m in the men’s shot put to take gold. The winning effort came on his final attempt with four previous throws below the 18m mark.

Jade Ive (Sutton & District) also had a fantastic competition in India setting a new games record of 4.05m in winning the women’s pole vault. England teammate Abigail Haywood (Sale Harriers) made it a British affair taking bronze with her 3.80m effort.

Finals

Henry Deji Tobais (Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow) finished fourth in the men’s 100m final with 10.52.

Peter Smith (Kingston upon Hull) won the men’s hammer with an effort of 68.38m. With four failed attempts from his six throws the northern based thrower achieved the winning distance on his fifth attempt.

Benjamin Williams (City of Stoke) claimed second place in the men’s triple jump on his fifth attempt. The jump of 15.41m (+0.7) was just one centimetre behind the winner’s best distance.

Qualifiers

Jordan McGrath (Birchfield Harriers) progresses to the final of the men’s 400m qualifying as second fastest with his 47.67 effort.

Simon Horsfield (East Cheshire) finished first in the first heat of the men’s 1500m, qualifying for the next stage of competition crossing the line in 3:52.64.

Christopher Baker (Enfield & Haringey AC) qualified through to the final of the men’s high jump. His jump of 1.95m was enough to take him through in first position.

Shelayna Oskan (Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow) will compete in the final of the women’s 400m after qualifying in second place with 54.90.

Abigail Irozuru (Sale Harriers Manchester) progresses in the women’s long jump competition with her 5.82m effort.
