European u18
British Athletics provides the opportunity through age group championships for athletes and coaches to experience and learn the key skills, abilities and behaviours needed to progress through the pathway and on to the senior international stage. Athletes will be expected to compete within their respective age group to ensure appropriate age and stage development experience and process, with the aim of transitioning on to become successful at future senior international championships and ultimately the Olympic Games. In exceptional circumstances for u18, where there isn’t an international opportunity available in the given season, British Athletics will consider selecting athletes for opportunities within the u20 age group champs programme aligned to the EA/IAAF ruling. The Selection Panel (“the Panel”) therefore aim to select a competitive team with athletes who they believe have the potential to reach a ‘Final’ relative to their event at the European u18. Unlike the other age-group championships taking place this summer, there is NOT a trials event for the European U18 Championships. The GB and NI team will travel to the Championships as a single team. All questions related to the selection policy, competition opportunities or team travel should be directed to agegroupchampsinfo@britishathletics.org.uk
There will be a virtual site visit 15th December so further information will be updated on this page in the coming weeks.

Planning – Key things to consider
· Climate: Average temperature in July ranges 18 – 28oC, with the warmest times of the day being ~10 am to ~9pm. Therefore, temperature may not start to cool down until after 9pm. Average relative humidity in July ranges 55% – 65%, so it could be humid and slightly muggy. At its highest these conditions could feel uncomfortable. For comparison, London is 14 – 22 oC and 60 – 70 % humidity and would feel more comfortable than Jerusalem for the same time of year. For these conditions all athletes would benefit from good hydration strategies, and consideration to how they conduct themselves within these environmental conditions. Endurance athletes may potentially benefit from acclimation prior to travel if competing in a day session. Please note timetable including daily schedule and especially early session start times
· Altitude: Jerusalem, Israel is ~779m above sea level, which although at slight altitude it is considered to have negligible influence on performance.
· Time Difference: Jerusalem, Israel is 3 hours ahead of UK time, ie. when it is 11 am in the UK it is 2 pm in Jerusalem. Although the difference is not too great, nearer the time considerations to how to plan the first few days may be required, as travel fatigue could be a larger consideration than jet lag.
· Training Blocks? When to peak?
· Which competition? When? Where? Why?
· Who will be the team staff for your event – start to build relationship
· Assess opposition and what will be needed to progress through rounds
· Nutrition – snacks for championships?
· Lifestyle Planning & extras
· Competition Timetable and Official Implements List can be found here: https://www.european-athletics.com/competitions/european-athletics-u18-championships
· Travel: Depart 1st July, return 9th July 2022. There may be at Team Preparation Day on Thursday 30th July before departure the next day tbc.
