PREVIEW: BRITISH ATHLETICS CROSS CHALLENGE FINAL INC UK INTER COUNTIES XC CHAMPS

The conclusion of the British Athletics Cross Challenge will come to a close with the Final at Prestwold Hall in Loughborough on Saturday 12 March, and the event will also host the UK Inter Counties Cross Country Championships.

The event will be streamed live on the British Athletics website with action kicking off with the U20 men’s race at 11am, until the completion of the senior men’s race which starts at 14:45.

With double points on offer in the final event of the five-fixture event, there is plenty of opportunity for the leaderboard to change to find the domestic champions for the 2021/22 Series.

In the senior women’s standings, Jess Gibbon (Reading) and Hannah Irwin (James Thie, Cambridge and Coleridge) are separated by one point at the top of the rankings on 110 and 109 points respectively.

Gibbon sealed victory in Milton Keynes, the first Cross Challenge victory in her career, while Irwin moved into second position following her top spot at the Dundonald event in January. Jenny Nesbitt (Chris Jones, Cardiff) is third on 107 with Kate Avery (Shildon) on 106 points.

In the senior men’s standings, Hugo Milner (Derby) still leads the way after impressing on his way to race victories in Cardiff and Milton Keynes last year, but Zakariya Mahamed (Idris Hamud, Southampton) is in-form following his victory in Northern Ireland last month. The latter is second in the overall standings, just one point behind Milner’s 112.

Jack Millar (David Bedwell, Bristol and West), Stuart McCallum (Bud Baldaro, Winchester) and Matthew Stonier (Peter Mullervy, Invicta East Kent) round out the top five in the senior men’s rankings – Millar on 101, while the other two athletes are on 100 points.

Ellen Weir (Anne Hegvold, Hercules Wimbledon) leads the women’s U20 standings going into the final with Alice Garner (Mick Woods, Aldershot Farnham and District) and Beatrice Wood (Dave Amey, City of Salisbury) in second and third overall.

An impressive showing in Dundonald has moved Rowan Miell-Ingram (Radley) to the top of the overall standings in the men’s U20 category. He has a three-point lead from Louis Small (Stella Bandu, Ashford) with Liam Rawlings (Colin Lancaster, Shrewsbury) third, a point further behind.

Jess Bailey (Matthew Bailey, Leven Valley) leads by two points in the U17 women’s standings from Louisa Brown (Garscube Harriers) and Kiya Dee (Cheltenham).

After winning the last Cross Challenge fixture in Dundonald, Chorley’s Jacob Deacon (Katie Hewison) leads by one from St Edmund Pacers’ Benjamin Peck and Seamus Robinson (Westbury) in the men’s U17 contest.

Elsewhere, following a dominant display in Northern Ireland in January, Freya Woodhead (Bideford) opened up a three-point lead In the battle for the U15 women’s crown, with Isla Bryson (Exeter) and Zoe Gilbody (John Skevington, Wreake and Soar Valley) on her tail.

There is no change in the U15 men’s rankings as Robert Price (Andrew Carter, Vale Royal) is a convincing leader having won all three of the opener fixtures. He sits of 59 points with Craig Shennan (Angela Carson, Giffnock North) and Iwan Thomas (Neil Thomas, Carmarthen & District) on 54 points.

Swansea’s Libby Hale (John Griffiths) heads the U13 girls’ standings after triumphing in Cardiff and Milton Keynes, with Estelle Lowe (Westbury) two points back.

There is also a three-way tie at the top of the U13 boys’ standings with Wells City Harriers’ Will Birchall, Dundonald winner Calum Dick (Dennese Whiteford, Giffnock North) and William Coles (Carmarthen & District Harriers) all on 56 points.
